Kung Fu Hustle: Heh, heh, okaaaaay

Kung Fu Hustle is weird. You know, those craaazy Buddhists know how to make a confusing and strange movie. We had heard this movie was 'hilarious'--comedic genius. Well, okay. So it's funny. Kind of. Sometimes it makes you laugh out loud, but other times it's seriously dark. With no hint of humor.

"Oh look, all those people just got murdered!"

Not exactly funny ha ha.

However, the special effects are silky smooth, and the fight scenes are pure martial art magic. Though at times I wanted to turn off the VCR and watch random Friday night TV (To Catch a Predator, anyone?), other times I was completely engrossed. I think Tim laughed more than I did, but both of our mouths dropped open at how cool some of the scenes were.

When we turned it off, we looked at each other and agreed, "That was weird." But we liked it. Pretty much. It's definitely worth a rental, if not only to gawk at the cool fight scenes. And to laugh at an angry landlady who wears curlers and a nightgown all the time...

I give it a B. Tim agrees.

Jerry Seinfeld: I'm Telling You for the Last Time

Very funny show that Seinfeld did in '98. Had us laughing out loud the whole time. Also a fairly clean show, which was nice.

Our grade: A-

Rushmore: The Commentary

Does any one else listen to commentaries?

I, for one, really like listening to them.

The other night, as Aarin and I were going to bed, we decided to listen to a commentary to help us fall asleep. I should have known better than that. We chose the commentary on Rushmore, which needs not mention as an awesome film. I did not fall asleep quickly. In fact, I listened to the whole commentary (for like the third time).

The Rushmore commentary is one of the best. It is very fun to listen to Wes Anderson talk about the creative process, Owen Wilson talk about how he got expelled from a school where his dad was on the board, and Jason Schwartzman tell how he complimented Bill Murray on how he "ate that carrot like a man."

Does anyone else listen to these, and if so, what are other favorites?

Maria Full of Grace

Freaking awesome.

Quiet. Reflective. Chest-tightening pain. Unmanipulated drama. Meaningful. Hard to watch.

We both give it an A.

Is Anyone Even Looking At This Anymore?

Miami Vice: Boo.

So, if you go to movies.com, you can read all the reasons why we disliked Miami Vice. Here are a few extra tidbits:

1. You'd think Michael Mann would continue his stellar work and make this movie a whole lot of gritty fun. But no. It's boring. No kidding. There are some cool scenes, but for the most part, it's really boring.

2. Even the 5 sex scenes are boring, not to mention completely gratuitous and grody.

3. Speaking of sex scenes, that was the ONLY way Mann established a relationship with the characters. How do we know Jamie Foxx's character and his coworker are dating? Because they hop in the shower together and have a prolonged bedroom scene that includes very little believeable affection (though some). But WORSE is Colin Farrel's character. First of all, I find it hard to believe Colin Farrel can have any sort of real love story anymore, just 'cause he's so nasty. But back to my point. How do we know he and the girl from the other side are in love? Because they randomly spent a weekend naked together after knowing each other from a few drug deals. And then we're supposed to believe they have something "real". Give me a break.

Bagby gives this a C-.

I give it a C.

Tim's oscilating between the two.
